Craftsmanship | Hama Chirimen

Traditionally used for fine kimono, Hama Chirimen is a refined silk textile woven in Nagahama, Shiga, where centuries of textile craftsmanship have been shaped by the waters of Lake Biwa and the underground streams of Mount Ibuki.

At the heart of its creation is hatcho twisting, a distinctive process in which silk threads are moistened with water and twisted thousands of times per meter. Threads twisted in opposite directions are carefully woven together, and during the finishing process, their stored energy is released to form the delicate textured surface known as shibo.
